Not every ageing tank needs replacing. If the tank is structurally sound but the internal surfaces are corroded, pitted, leaking at the seams or no longer meet current water regulations, refurbishment can bring it back into good, compliant condition for a fraction of the disruption of a full replacement. When Refurbishment Makes Sense

Refurbishment is often the right choice when:

• The tank body and supports are structurally sound, but the internal surface is rusting, flaking or pitted
• There are minor leaks at seams, joints or connections
• Access is so restricted that removing the tank would mean major building works
• The lid, insulation, screens or pipework no longer meet current water regulations
• You want to extend the life of the tank and keep costs and downtime down

Our Water Tank Refurbishment Process

1. Survey – an experienced, certified engineer inspects the tank, supports, access and pipework, and you receive a detailed quotation with a risk assessment, method statement and estimated timescale of works.
2. Temporary supply – where needed we set up a mains bypass or temporary tank so the building keeps its water supply while the tank is out of service.
3. Drain down and preparation – the tank is drained, cleaned and the internal surfaces prepared, removing corrosion, loose coatings and debris.
4. Repairs and relining – leaks and damaged areas are repaired and the tank is relined using materials suitable for contact with drinking water.
5. Upgrades – we bring the rest of the installation up to standard, from new lids, insect screens and insulation to valve and pipework replacement and byelaw upgrades.
6. Chlorination and handover – the tank and pipework are chlorinated, flushed and returned to service.

Commercial Water Tank Relining

Relining seals the inside of a tank with a new protective lining, stopping corrosion and leaks and giving the stored water a clean, smooth surface that is easier to keep clean. It is particularly effective for older galvanised steel tanks, where corrosion inside the tank is the main problem, and for GRP tanks with localised damage or weeping joints.

Refurbish or Replace?

Refurbishment usually means less disruption and a lower cost than replacement, but it isn’t always the best long-term option. Where a tank is oversized, badly positioned or beyond repair, replacement with a new one-piece, two-piece or sectional tank may give better value over the life of the building.
